Dr. Gardenfors spent many childhood summers on his grandparents’ dairy farm in Sweden, where he developed a deep bond with animals from an early age. His interests in biology led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology at Washington State University, followed by a Master's degree in Toxicology at the prestigious Karolinska Institute—home to the Nobel Assembly that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.

During his time at Karolinska Institute, while conducting biomedical research and working with laboratory animal veterinarians, he discovered his true calling: to heal and alleviate the suffering of all animals — whether beloved pets, livestock, or those involved in scientific research. Driven by this realization, he went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Ross University and completed his clinical training at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

After graduating, Dr. Gardenfors spent several years practicing in California as a general and emergency clinician. In 2020, drawn by his love for the outdoors and a spirit of adventure, he relocated to Alaska. Over time, he came to realize that in order to provide the level of care and personalized service he believed animals and their owners deserved, he would need to create something of his own. Captivated by the beauty and welcoming community of Homer, he founded Kachemak Bay Animal Hospital in 2021, to serve the animals in this region.

Homer has been a wonderful place for Dr. Gardenfors to raise his family. He and his wife, Lynn, also a veterinarian, have three children, two boys and a girl. They enjoy many outdoor activities such as biking, skiing, and fishing. At home, Dr. Gardenfors loves spending time with his pup, Missy, a spirited Pomeranian. Professionally, he has a strong passion for surgery, orthopedic and soft tissue, as well as emergency medicine, where his skills can make a life-saving difference in animals’ most critical moments. He also enjoys treating exotic pets and is dedicated to providing quality care for a wide range of animal species.
